Art

Art at Templenewsam Halton Primary gives pupils opportunities to explore and develop skills in drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D form. Across school, children learn to use tools and materials confidently, make choices about colour, line, shape and texture, and take inspiration from a wide range of artists. As they progress, pupils experiment, refine and develop their ideas, use sketchbooks to record work and talk about their art using appropriate vocabulary.

Early Years

In EYFS, children explore drawing, painting, printing, collage and 3D form using a variety of tools and materials. They learn to hold tools correctly, mix colours, make simple prints, model with clay and natural materials, and create artwork linked to experiences. They begin to talk about their creations and explore the work of artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Paul Klee and Henri Matisse.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, children learn to develop control using a wide range of drawing tools, painting techniques and collage and textile materials. They mix colours, experiment with texture, create prints and explore sculpture using natural, man-made and recycled materials. Pupils begin to use sketchbooks to collect and develop ideas and build confidence discussing their art.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children refine skills across all disciplines, including drawing, painting, printing, 3D form and textiles. They use sketchbooks to plan, research and reflect, work on different scales, apply increasingly complex colour mixing and techniques, and make informed artistic choices. Pupils study a wide range of artists, experiments and styles — including Henry Moore, Monet, William Morris, Van Gogh and David Hockney — and use this to inspire their own work.
