At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, our music curriculum gives children the chance to sing, play instruments, listen to a range of music and create their own. Pupils develop an understanding of pulse, rhythm and pitch and build confidence performing on their own and with others. They are encouraged to enjoy music, talk about how it sounds and use it to express ideas.
In Early Years, children explore their voices through songs and rhymes, respond to music with movement and experiment with sounds using instruments. They begin to notice simple contrasts such as loud or quiet and enjoy joining in with performances.
In Key Stage 1, pupils develop pulse, rhythm and pitch, copy short patterns and sing with growing control. They use instruments to accompany songs, begin simple composing and listen to music from different styles, talking about what they hear.
In Key Stage 2, pupils build on their skills to sing and play with increasing accuracy and expression. They read simple notation, compose short pieces, and learn about instruments and musical styles. Children rehearse and perform as part of a group and talk confidently about the music they create and hear.
