At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, our geography curriculum helps pupils understand their place in the world by exploring local, national and global environments. Children learn about human and physical features, weather and climate, and develop skills using maps, atlases, globes and fieldwork. As they progress, pupils compare places and landscapes, investigate environmental issues and broaden their understanding of how people and places are connected.
In Early Years, children explore their immediate environment, noticing and talking about features in the classroom, outdoor spaces and local area. They observe weather and seasons, compare environments and learn simple geographical language.
In Key Stage 1, pupils identify the United Kingdom’s countries and capital cities and use world maps to locate continents and oceans. They study weather and seasonal patterns, compare contrasting locations and carry out simple fieldwork, using vocabulary to describe human and physical features.
In Key Stage 2, children apply and extend mapwork and fieldwork skills. They study physical geography such as rivers, mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, climate zones and biomes, and human geography including land use, settlement and trade. Pupils compare regions in Europe, North America and South America and learn how geography affects daily life and environment.
