At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, our PE curriculum helps children develop strength, coordination, agility and confidence through a wide range of physical activities. Pupils learn how to move safely, work independently and with others and understand the importance of being active for their physical and mental wellbeing. As they progress, they apply skills across different sports, learn simple tactics and take part in cooperative and competitive challenges.
In Early Years, children develop coordination, balance and control through movement, climbing, riding, ball play and simple games. They learn to negotiate space and begin working alongside others using equipment safely.
In Key Stage 1, pupils master basic movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. They take part in dance, gymnastics, athletics and simple team or invasion games and begin using skills with control and growing confidence.
In Key Stage 2, children apply these skills in a wider range of sports including athletics, dance, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities, striking and fielding and invasion games. They develop technique and teamwork, learn rules and tactics and reflect on how to improve their performance.
