Maths
At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, we want children to see mathematics as an exciting, creative subject that helps them make sense of the world. Through our values of adventure, community and communication, pupils explore ideas, learn from mistakes and develop confidence using numbers, patterns and reasoning in everyday contexts.
We follow a mastery approach using White Rose Maths so that skills build securely over time. Children revisit and apply key concepts, practise regularly and explain their thinking using mathematical vocabulary. All pupils are supported to achieve and deepen their understanding, with opportunities to reason, problem solve and experience success as mathematicians.
Early Years
In Early Years, children develop early number sense through counting, subitising and linking numerals to quantities. They explore shape, space and measures in play, make patterns and compare amounts, and begin to solve problems in real and meaningful contexts. Children talk about size, position, time and routes and learn that numbers and shapes can be combined, built and broken apart in different ways.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, pupils build confidence with number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They deepen their understanding of number facts, work with shapes, measure length, mass, capacity, money and time and begin exploring fractions. Children use equipment to represent ideas, spot patterns and relationships and explain how they know, laying foundations for later reasoning.
Key Stage 2
Progression maps
These progression maps show the progression in each area of mathematics.
Maths ambassadors
We are the Templenewsam Halton Maths Ambassadors and this is what our job entails:
- We set an example during lessons, we are motivated and we share our ideas.
- We deliver certificates during our celebration assembly every Friday.
- We share our ideas in our meetings about how to improve Maths and raise the profile.
- We give other children a voice to be heard.
- We share our love of Maths!
