Year 5

Autumn 2
This half term, we paid our respects to all those those who have fought in the services in the wars and for the freedom of this country. We learnt the technique of blackout poetry and displayed our learning.

Autumn 1
We have had a wonderful start to Year 5. The children have made great progress across the curriculum, particularly in our writing processes in narrative description and Traditional Tales. In maths, we began cementing our Year 5 knowledge by learning place value of numbers to 1 million.
We continued with learning formal written methods for addition, subtraction and short multiplication. We then began to solve problems using these methods. Finally in maths, we stated learning about fractions. We will continue this after the holiday.
The children showed great enthusiasm in Geography, learning about climate zones. In DT, the children designed, planned, made and evaluated travel bags. I am sure, you will love to see these when they are sent home at the end of the year!
Last week, in PE, we took the opportunity to teach the children playground games, with the aim of having more settled playtimes.

The children have started off these games brilliantly. With Bonfire Night just around the corner, we were very lucky to have Fire Fighters from Killingbeck Fire Station to talk to the children about safety on the 5th November.

In Science, we learnt about properties and changes in materials. We investigated how soluble some substances are. We tested chalk, tin foil, salt, toothpaste, hot chocolate and sand. To keep the test fair, we used the same amount of water and substance at the same temperature. We put each substance in the water and observed whether it dissolved. I wonder if your child can remember which substances are soluble?
