Captain Oates telling the Year 2 children what it takes to be an explorer   'Captain Oates' posing with some Year 2 children

The children in Year 2 had a special visit from the famous Antarctic explorer Captain Oates! He travelled back from the past and told them all about his expedition to the South Pole. The children asked lots of fantastic questions and discovered that in order to be a successful explorer you have to be;
  1. Organised
  2. A team player
  3. Resilient
  4. Fit and healthy
  5. Good at solving problems
  6. Brave

Year 2 have been continuing their Science learning on Animals, including humans. We have been investigating how animals (and humans) can grow and change as they develop. We have been investigating the key question of Do our feet get bigger as we get older? For this investigation, we paired up with the Year 6s and compared Year 2 feet sizes with Year 6s'. We came to the conclusion that Year 6 do have bigger feet but not always. We also discussed that feet stop growing eventually, otherwise elderly people would have very large feet!

We have made an excellent start to the Spring term in our Maths lessons! We have been learning about different 2D and 3D shapes, including their properties and similarities/differences between shapes. The children were able to showcase their knowledge in this practical 'sorting' lesson by coming up with their own criteria for sorting the shapes.

Autumn 2

To kick start our Science topic of Materials we have been investigating the different types of materials in our everyday world. We have been sorting and categorising materials based on their properties and are looking forward to performing some investigations to test the suitability of different materials.

Autumn 1

Year 2 have kick-started their History topic on Temple Newsam House by making their very own Tudor ruffs. We looked at fashion during Tudor times and noticed how they liked to wear collars made from fine lace. We made our collars by drawing patterns on paper and folding it carefully to create the effect of a ruff. We then paraded our ruffs, thinking carefully about how smartly a wealthy Tudor would have walked and moved.

Introduction from the teachers

"Hello I'm Miss Mathewson and welcome to Moorhens 2025-26! This year, we’re going to make amazing memories together! We’ll go on exciting school trips, including a fun day out exploring Filey Beach and a magical visit to the Pantomime, full of laughter and surprises.
We’ll challenge ourselves with lots of new learning, both inside the classroom and outdoors. We’ll become superstars at maths with new topics such as multiplication and division, using games and challenges to help us feel confident with our numbers. We will read lots of exciting books and create some fantastic pieces of writing.
Get ready for a year full of adventure, discovery, and fun.  I can’t wait to see you shine! "
