Science
At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, we want to foster curious learners who are risk takers, question makers and explorers, and who, through a hands-on approach to science, can discover more about the world we live in. Children learn about living things, materials and physical processes, and explore how the world works through practical investigations. They develop confidence using scientific skills such as observing, predicting, testing and explaining their findings.
Early Years
In Early Years, children explore the world around them through first-hand experiences. They notice seasonal changes, care for plants, learn about animals and lifecycles, talk about materials and how they change and use simple equipment. Children investigate forces through play, observe habitats in the school grounds and begin to ask questions about what they see.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, pupils study everyday materials, plants, animals and seasonal changes. They learn how materials can be described and sorted, name and compare animals, identify body parts and understand what plants need to grow. Children explore simple food chains, habitats and basic needs for survival and begin to take part in structured enquiries using observations, measurements and simple tests.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, children build on their knowledge through topics including rocks, light, forces and magnets, sound, electricity, states of matter and the water cycle. They deepen their understanding of living things through studies of classification, lifecycles, evolution and inheritance and learn more about the human body — skeletons, digestion, circulation and health. Pupils carry out investigations, analyse data, draw conclusions and use scientific vocabulary and diagrams to explain their findings.
