Languages

At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, we teach French from an early age and pupils develop their language skills and cultural understanding as they move through school. Children build confidence listening, speaking, reading and writing in another language, and learn about countries, customs, food and festivals linked to the cultures they study.

Early Years

In Early Years, children enjoy nursery rhymes and simple French words and phrases. They listen, repeat sounds and begin to notice similarities and differences between their own lives and families and those in other countries.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, pupils learn French only. They use greetings and simple questions, learn numbers and colours and practise responding orally with increasing confidence. Children listen carefully to familiar words, repeat accurately and take part in simple French conversations supported by songs, stories and games.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children deepen their learning in French, building vocabulary and sentences to describe themselves, their families, school and leisure activities. They read and write short phrases, explore grammar, present ideas and learn about French-speaking countries, including Canada. Pupils are also introduced to Spanish and German through selected themed units, comparing language patterns, festivals, stories, landmarks and food traditions across the three languages.
