History

At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, our history curriculum builds pupils’ understanding of people, places and events from the past, developing curiosity about how life has changed over time. Children learn to ask questions, explore sources and build chronological knowledge from familiar personal history through to ancient civilisations and significant periods in Britain. Through enquiry-based learning, pupils develop an understanding of cause, consequence and the ways historians investigate and interpret the past.

Early Years

In Early Years, children explore family stories and talk about their own lives and routines. They notice similarities and differences between past and present and learn about significant events and characters through stories, celebrations and shared experiences.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, pupils build awareness of the past using historical vocabulary. They study significant individuals, events and places locally and beyond living memory and learn how we gather information using artefacts, photos and simple sources. Children compare aspects of life and begin forming simple historical explanations.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children deepen their chronological framework through studies of Stone Age Britain, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Maya civilisations and post-1066 British history. They ask and answer historical questions, analyse sources, make comparisons over time and understand themes such as civilisation, invasion, power, society and legacy.
