Design & Technology

Design & Technology at Templenewsam Halton Primary enables pupils to design purposeful products, select tools and materials safely and evaluate their work. Across school, children explore structures, textiles, mechanisms, food and electrical systems as they move from simple ideas to increasingly detailed designs, plans and practical making.

Early years

Children explore materials, tools and techniques, experiment with colour, texture, form and function and share their creations. They use small tools such as scissors and brushes with care and accuracy.

Key Stage 1

Pupils design simple products based on criteria, select from basic tools and materials, and construct with textiles, structures, food and mechanisms. They explore wheels, axles, sliders and levers, and begin to evaluate their work against original ideas.

Key Stage 2

Children plan and present design ideas using sketches and prototypes, make purposeful products by selecting tools accurately and apply increasing technical knowledge. They work with structures, linkages, pneumatic and cam mechanisms, electrical circuits, textiles and food technology, evaluating and refining products for users and purpose.
