As part of our Science learning on the circulatory system, we were delighted to welcome a cardiologist into class to talk about the heart and her important role. The children were highly engaged and inspired by the visit, and we hope it has sparked curiosity and ambition for future learning and careers.

Children at the Anne Frank workshop   Children listening to an extract from the diary

We were fortunate to be invited to an Anne Frank workshop at Temple Moor, hosted by their Year 9 students. During the workshop, we explored the life of Anne Frank, learning about her childhood and experiences during the Nazi occupation of Europe. We also discussed what life was like for people living in Europe at this time and why Anne’s diary is such an important historical source. The students explained how her diary survived the war and eventually went on to be published, helping to share her story and lessons of tolerance, courage, and resilience with the world.
We also received some amazing feedback from the staff at Temple Moor - "Your children were very impressive not just in the way they behaved, their attitude and their engagement with the talks but also the maturity shown in their understanding and the questions they asked, about such a sensitive subject matter. They were a credit to your school."

Children clearly explaining their answers    Children using counters to understand ratio   Children using counters to understand ratio - for every...there are...   Pattern seeking in ratio

In Maths this term, we have started an exciting new topic: Ratio and Proportion. To help us understand this new learning, we have been using counters to create different patterns. This practical approach allows us to see ratios clearly and makes the maths more meaningful.
We have been learning how to describe ratios using correct mathematical language, such as: “For every 2 blue counters, there is 1 red counter.” By building and comparing these patterns, we are developing a strong understanding of how quantities are related and how they can be scaled up or down while keeping the same ratio.
This hands-on learning will support us as we move on to more challenging problems, including solving word problems, simplifying ratios, and applying ratio and proportion to real-life situations. We are building solid foundations that will help us progress confidently throughout the topic and beyond!

This half term for our DT project, we are designing and making an adventure playground for primary school children to enhance their playtime. To begin with, we have used art straws to experiment how to strengthen our structures. We can't wait to see our final products!

Welcome Back to Cuckoos!
I hope you’ve all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas holiday! The children have come back full of energy, and we have lots to look forward to in the first half of the spring term.
In DT, we’ll be putting our creativity to the test as we design and make our very own adventure playgrounds—a chance to plan, build, and bring our ideas to life! In geography, we’ll be exploring volcanoes and earthquakes, learning about these powerful natural events and how they shape the world around us.
PE is also full of variety this term, as we dive into dance and discover different styles each week, helping us develop coordination, rhythm, and confidence.
I’m really looking forward to another exciting half term with Cuckoos and seeing all the amazing work and discoveries the children make!
Hello and a warm welcome back to Cormorants Class!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and have had a chance to rest and recharge over the holidays. It’s been fantastic to see the children return full of energy and enthusiasm, ready for another exciting half term.
We have lots to look forward to in Spring 1! In DT, we’ll be getting creative as we design and make our own adventure playgrounds—a brilliant opportunity to plan, build, and see our ideas come to life. In Science, we’ll be learning all about the circulatory system and stepping into the shoes of cardiologists to explore how our hearts and blood vessels keep us healthy.
PE this term will be tennis, giving the children the chance to develop their skills, coordination, and teamwork on the court.
I’m really looking forward to seeing all the wonderful learning and creativity this half term brings and another fantastic term with Cormorants!

In art last half term, our skill focus was painting and our final pieces were propaganda posters linked to our WWII history topic. We studied colours and their meaning within art, text types that help to promote our message and designed posters about topics we are interested in and passionate about. They have turned out fantastically and are now displayed in our art gallery!

Autumn 2

Hello and welcome to Cuckoos! We’ve had such a positive start to the year, and I’m delighted with how well the children settled in throughout the first half term. They have shown great enthusiasm, teamwork, and curiosity—qualities that really shone during our residential, which was a fantastic experience for everyone. As we move into our second half term, we’re heading into an exciting (and busy!) run-up to Christmas. We have lots of festive dates and events planned, so please do keep an eye on the newsletter to stay up to date.
Our learning this term is equally exciting: we’ll be delving into World War II and enjoying our new class book, Letters from the Lighthouse. In French, we’ll be learning through games and songs, and we’ll be taking part in plenty of hands-on activities to bring our topics to life. A quick reminder that PE will sometimes take place outside, so please ensure children have the correct kit with them so they can take part comfortably and safely.
I’m really looking forward to another wonderful term with Cuckoos!

Hello and a warm welcome back to Cormorants Class! It has been wonderful to see how confidently the children settled into Year 6 during the first half term—they have already shown such maturity, enthusiasm, and a real eagerness to learn. Our residential was a real highlight, and the children did us proud; it was fantastic to watch them challenge themselves, work together, and make such brilliant memories.
As we move into our second half term, we have plenty of exciting learning ahead. In science, we’ll be exploring Living Things and Their Habitats, building a deeper understanding of the world around us. In English, we’ll be writing diary entries, using imagination and empathy to bring our ideas to life. We also have some fantastic art planned, where the children will be designing and creating their own propaganda posters. With Christmas approaching, there will be lots of festive dates and events to enjoy too, so please keep an eye on the newsletter. I’m very much looking forward to another wonderful term with Cormorants!

Autumn 1

In Geography, our topic question has been 'How can we power our planet'? We have looked at fossil fuels, different types of renewable energy and how we could power our school. We used the iPads to conduct some research into the different sources of energy used in different countries based on the geography of that place.

During our DT topic this half term, we have been looking at recycle, reuse and reduce. With a large portion of materials being thrown away after just one use, we wanted to change that. We have made phone cases, suitable for children, out of left over material and old clothes. We did some product research to see what was already available on the market, learnt different stitching techniques and then designed our final piece. We are so happy with how they turned out!

This half term, we have been playing some maths games during our lessons. Although they are really fun to play, they are also helping us with different maths skills like problem solving, forward thinking, strategizing, working methodically and reasoning.

Year 6 have really been enjoying the electricity topic in science this half term. The children have been making and drawing circuits using different electrical components. Our favourite lesson so far was the one where we pretended to be electricians on our first job and diagnose the problem within a circuit before offering a solution. We can definitely see this being a career for some of our children!

Year 6 have had a fantastic morning at St Mary's church in Whitkirk to celebrate their heritage week. We learnt about the history of the church and did lots of activities about it. We hope to go back there in the near future.
