Children from across the whole school took part in our first ‘House Day’ of the year. The challenge was based around the founders of two of our Houses; Amelia Earhart and Rosalind Franklin, who between them carried out work in the fields of Science and Aviation. Children were tasked with creating an aeroplane that would fly the furthest. Starting in their own classes, children had some input about the basics of a paper aeroplane and discussed some of the science behind it linked to aerodynamics and air resistance. Following this, children split off into their house teams to refine and build a final aeroplane. It was fantastic to see children of all ages working collaboratively to come up with and test out ideas. Our older children were brilliant as they supported some of the younger children to get involved in the activities. There was a definite competitive edge amongst both staff and children throughout the whole morning and lots of fun was had by all. In the afternoon, one ‘pilot’ from each house was taken to a secret testing facility where they had 3 attempts to throw their plane. The longest distance was measured and recorded before the final results were shared in a special extended Friday assembly. Well done to all of our teams for their tremendous efforts but a special congratulations go to our overall winners, Franklin, whose gigantic aeroplane flew a very impressive 16 metres! We look forward to our next House Day in Spring. Keep an eye on the website for more details in the new year.
